This spring our province experienced the most costly disasters in Canada’s history. A massive wildfire tore through Fort McMurray and took nearly 2 months to be declared officially under control. The fires spread quickly through the community, destroying approximately 2,400 homes and buildings and forcing the largest wildfire evacuation in Albertan history. Firefighters from all over our country came in to aid in the efforts to stop the flames, however many families lost everything.
The van’t Wouts were one of those families. Their evacuation story is crazy and hard to believe and it’s such a miracle that everyone was able to get out safely. Daphne told me that where their house once stood is now a pile of ashes. Everything….everything…. was destroyed.
And yet through all the devastation, she said the sense of community and goodness of those around her has been overwhelming. In fact, the goodness of strangers is how I had the pleasure of meeting them. This session was given to them by one of the classes at Trinity Christian School where they enrolled their daughter for the last couple of months of school. Each class came together to try and bless this family as they walked through this difficult time. Isn’t that amazing?!
The van’t Wouts are back in Fort McMurray now waiting to be able to rebuild their home. Please join me in praying and sending blessings to them as they begin a new chapter.
It was such a pleasure to meet you. I hope these images will be a treasure in your new home.
